Overview and Highlights

Mount Makalu is the fifth highest mountain in the world. This mountain stands alone with a height of 8,463m/27,765ft. This mountain is among the ones that are considered as the treasures of the country. Makalu is among the mountains that are the world’s tallest ones. This is why the peak has been proved to be a favourite one to the explorers for trekking and expeditions. According to Nepal Tourism Board, these two activities are the most preferred ones by the explorers who have come to Nepal and want to enjoy their holidays here.

Mount Makalu lies 19 km to the southern-east of Mount Everest along the border of India and China. This peak is among the mountains that are shaped like a four sided pyramid. Makalu owns two secondary peaks. One of them is Makalu II or also known as Kangchungtse lies approximately 3 km away from the main peak to the northern-east side. This mountain stretches to the height of 7,678m/25,109ft. Another one is Chomo Lonzo that stretches 7,804m/25,603ft to the sky.

Makalu was first conquered by Lionel Terray and Jean Couzy, a French expedition team that was led by Jean Franco on 15th of May, 1955. Since then, Mount Makalu has been a favourite destination for adventure lovers and explorers. They have admired the trips this region. They have taken lifelong memories with them and have left positive reviews that are inspiring to the upcoming explorers.

FAQs

What kind of insurance do I need?

We invest in insurance coverage for commercial liability and medical and disability insurance for our guides and Sherpas while participating on our programs. We cannot insure you for your personal needs, but we do expect you to be as fiscally responsible as we are. We strongly recommend that you insure yourself against potentially expensive difficulties that may arise. First, trip cancellation insurance may provide financial relief should you be forced to withdraw from the climb before it even happens. Next, make sure you have adequate traveler's medical and evacuation insurance for coverage should you have a problem during the trip. Medical care and evacuation from Everest can be expensive.

What else do I need to pay for?

You may spend some additional money on the trek buying drinks and snacks (food is provided for you). If you go down to Pheriche for rest and relaxation, you will need some additional money for this (estimate $35 per day).

What if I want to leave early?

No problem, we will organize you a porter and you can hike back to Lukla. The porter will carry your duffel bags. We will provide you a stipend to cover your lodges and meals on the hike out. Our staff at Lukla will meet you, arrange tickets, and assist you to make the flight to Kathmandu.

How do my duffel bags get back to Kathmandu?

We will hire porters to carry your duffels back to Lukla, where they will be flown to Kathmandu.

How much personal gear of mine will the Sherpas carry to C1, C2, C3, C4?

The Sherpas will carry a reasonable amount of your personal gear for you up to the camps. For example — your sleeping bag, down suit, extra high altitude gear, some food and snacks, etc. You should not have to carry a big load at any time on the trip — we want you to be able to move at a reasonable speed. You will need to carry with you the things you require during the day-clothes, snacks, water, camera, etc.

Why do I need a second sleeping bag?

We have a limited number of "extra" shared bags available for upper camps, but most climbers will appreciate having a dedicated bag at Base Camp and then another bag that is used above the Icefall. We don't want to carry bags up and down the Icefall.

What if I want to order more oxygen?

Additional oxygen is available delivered to the South Col at $1500 per cylinder (1800 liters). Most climbers do not require extra oxygen, we provide a generous supply (climb at 3 liters/minute above C3, sleep at 1 liter/min at Col).

How does a helicopter rescue work from Base Camp?

We can call for rescue with the B3 helicopter from Fishtail Helicopter. The cost is $10,000. This is the only helicopter that is able to safely land at Base Camp.

What do I do with my passport and plane ticket while I am climbing?

We suggest that you leave these items with our staff in Kathmandu, so it is easy for them to change your tickets or extend your visa for you while you are climbing.
