Bhaktapur is one of the major cities in Nepal. It is an ancient town of the Newars in the east corner of the Kathmandu Valley. The place was previously called Khworping. It is located in the Bagmati Zone of Nepal and is the third largest city in Kathmandu Valley. This place is famous for a type of curd made by the local settlers which is believed to be found like nowhere else in the world.
Bhaktapur is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its richness in cultures, temples, arts and crafts being the prime reason. The census of 2011 counts the population of Bhaktapur as 72,543. Bhaktapur is a home to traditional cultures, arts and historical monuments. Sightseeing in Bhaktapur is absolutely a beautiful idea for tourists.
The major temple of this place is the Bhaktapur Durbar Square. It is an exquisite form of ancient architectural art. The temples and monuments of this place are highly admired. The five-storeyed pagoda which is known as Nyatapola temple was built by King Bhupatindra Malla in the year 1702 A.D. The Bhairab Nath Temple is another pagoda dedicated to Lord Bhiarab. The Dattatraya temple is known to be built from the woods from a single tree. The other famous sites in Bhaktapur are the Changunarayan temple located near the Changunarayan village. Also the Siddha Pokhari, which is a large rectangular pond situated near the gate of the city is a home to a varieties of fishes. And, the Kailashnath Mahadev Statue which is the world’s tallest Lord Shiva statue standing with a height of 143 feet situated in Sanga, Bhaktapur.
