Gosainkunda is a famous Hindu holy lake situated at an altitude of 4,380m/14,370ft. This lake is considered as a sacred one. People who are Hindu followers respect this pilgrimage site. People from far away come to this site to worship and believe that it fulfils their wishes. It is believed that this lake was created when legendary Lord Shiva tried to quench his thirst from a glacier after swallowing a poison which could destroy the entire lives on earth.
There are many lakes in Gosainkunda such as Saraswati Kunda, Bhairab Kunda, Surya Kunda and Gosainkunda Lake which is the most famous and holiest one. During Janaipurnima in the month of August, hundreds of Hindu followers come to this lake and take a bath here annually. They believe that taking a bath in this lake on that particular day makes their wishes fulfilled and make them free from sins.
Gosainkunda is accessible after trekking for 4 days. It is best done after lodging in Langtang or Helambu. Then from either Dhunche of Syabru, the route usually passes through forest lines. On the way we come across a cheese factory and also a monastery. During the trek we can enjoy the views of mountain peaks like Langtang Lirung [7,246m], Gangchempo [5,846m], Dorje Lakpa [6,966m] and several other peaks.
